Philip D. Curtin collection, 1955-1990.

Collection consists of materials related to the teaching and writing career of historian, Philip D. Curtin, during his tenure at the University of Wisconsin, Swarthmore, and The Johns Hopkins University. Included are syllabi; notes related to committee meetings and department reorganization; grant and fellowship materials; clippings; and correspondence. Of interest are materials related to Dr. Curtin's written work: typescript of chapters, reviews, and correspondence with publichers. Africa, Jamaica, and the expansion of the British Colonial Empire are the subjects of extensive lecture notes and research notes that complete the collection.

Biographical Note: Philip D. Curtin is a historian and author. He was born in Philadelphia in 1922, graduated from Swarthmore in 1948, and completed his graduate studies at Harvard University where he received the Ph. D. in 1953. Dr. Curtin taught at Swarthmore, 1953-1956. In 1956, he received an appointment to the history department, University of Wisconsin, where he pursued his special interests in the fields of African and Caribbean history and worked to develop progr...
